C.J. Beathard is about to make Iowa history. On Monday night, the former Hawkeye will become the first quarterback from the school to start in a Monday Night Football game since the days of Chuck Long.

Beathard will make the start for the San Francisco 49ers tonight, as they take on the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. So not only will the former Hawkeye have the pressure of playing on Monday Night Football, he will make the start in one of the most iconic venues in all of sports.

Former Hawkeye Chuck Long wanted to try and help settle Beathard’s nerves a little bit and wish him well for the special occasion. And he also had a bit of advice to offer.

“My advice to you is this,” Long said, “when in doubt, throw it to George Kittle.”

Kittle, of course, is another former Iowa star who is also the tight end for the 49ers.

Beathard has played in three games for the 49ers this season, completing 57-of-91 pass attempts for 647 yards. He’s thrown four touchdowns and four interceptions on the year.

He also has one rushing touchdown.

San Francisco hasn’t enjoyed much success this season, posting a 1-4 record through the first five games. But perhaps Long’s message will spark Beathard and he’ll lead the 49ers to their second win of the season.
