Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz has long been known for his conservative play-calling. He’s trying to change that narrative a little bit.
Against Illinois, Ferentz sent out his punt team on a 4th-and-5 situation late in the first half. It looked like Iowa would be happy to punt the ball away and would trailed 13-10 at halftime.
But Ferentz, who apparently is becoming pretty gutsy as his tenure continues, called for a fake punt. It worked out to perfection.

A few plays later, the Hawkeyes punched the ball across the goal line and took a 17-13 lead into the half.
This is a lot more fun to watch when Ferentz has a few tricks up his sleeve. Hopefully this version of Ferentz sticks around.
