Rivalries never end. Fans maintain their passion (and hatred) even after the outcome is determined and the game is over. It’s one of the great aspects of college football.

But what happened after Saturday’s game between Iowa and Minnesota wasn’t the best demonstration of the intensity of a rivalry game. It was actually a little sad.

Following Iowa’s 48-31 win over Minnesota, fans began filing out of the stadium. As students were exiting, a chant of “We Hate Iowa” rang out, along with some other “rah, rah” chant. The problem? It sounds like there were about 10 people chanting.

It wasn’t very forceful.

There’s nothing wrong with continuing the rivalry outside the stadium. Spewing your hatred for a particular team, even after a loss, is just part of the sport. But you’ve got to get more participants to make it mean something.

Either that or decide to walk out of the stadium without saying much of anything. Especially after a 17-point loss.

Iowa’s three-score win over Minnesota was the fourth-straight victory for the Hawkeyes in the series. The Gophers still lead the all-time and trophy series, but the Hawkeyes are inching closer.
