What is the sport of football without a few targeting calls, am I right?

Of course not. We all hate them.

Granted, the rule is in place for a good reason. Most of the time, however, the rule gets called during a game for a hit that should perhaps be a 15-yard penalty, but doesn’t require a player to be ejected.

If a player does lower his helmet directly at a defenseless player, however, the rule makes perfect sense — it just doesn’t seem to happen often.

With the Iowa-Minnesota game completely in hand as the Hawkeyes led 48-31 with 45 seconds remaining, this targeting call was made on Iowa’s Amani Jones.

Here’s a look:

It was a hard hit for sure, but was it targeting?

Here’s a better angle:

It looks like Jones led with his shoulder, but what do we know when it comes to this ruling?

Jones was ejected from the game and will miss the first half of next week’s game against Indiana.
