What Kirk Ferentz said as Iowa prepares for rivalry showdown with Minnesota
The Iowa Hawkeyes snapped their two-game losing streak last weekend with a 17-12 win over Northwestern.
Hawkeyes quarterback Spencer Petras suffered a hard hit to his throwing shoulder the week before in the Hawkeyes 27-7 loss to No. 20 Wisconsin, and left the game with the Wildcats clearly not at 100%. Backup quarterback Alex Padilla entered after just the third series from scrimmage and led the Hawkeyes to back-to-back touchdowns in his first two drives.
As the Hawkeyes get ready to host their rivalry game with Minnesota this weekend, the depth chart is out and Petras will not be available. Padilla will be starting behind center as the Hawkeyes try to work their way back to the top of the B1G West standings.
The Gophers will be looking to bounce back from their 14-6 upset loss to Illinois last week.
Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz took to the podium and addressed the QB situation for the weekend, along with some other issues heading into the weekend’s battle for the Floyd of Rosedale trophy.
🗣 KF: "It will be great to get back home on Saturday. It's been about a month since we last played inside Kinnick Stadium." #Hawkeyes

Ferentz says RB Ivory Kelly-Martin is day-to-day. Kelly-Martin is still working his way back from an injury.

Ferentz says he expects Alex Padilla to continue to compete for the starting job even when Spencer Petras is 100% healthy.
“We’d love to have both guys back and healthy.”

Ferentz added that Petras can’t throw the ball effectively right now. He can play, medically speaking, but his shoulder injury isn’t allowing him to get enough zip on the ball.

Ferentz opens his press conference by questioning why team activities can’t begin until 6 a.m., per the NCAA, but NCAA-required drug tests can be conducted at 5:30 a.m.

Ferentz said he expects Riley Moss to be “full throttle” against Minnesota.
