Anthony McFarland was recently named Maryland’s starting running back, but it sounds like the Terrapins have a unique role in place for the redshirt sophomore.

McFarland enters 2019 after putting up quite a performance last season. He finished with 1,034 yards on the ground and four touchdowns while averaging 7.9 yards per carry. McFarland also added seven catches for the year, but it sounds like that number may be about to go up.

When discussing his role with Ahmed Ghafir of Inside MD Sports, McFarland pointed out that he is being lined up as a slot receiver a good bit. He did point out that he came into school as an all-purpose back, but his role was different under a different offense a year ago.

However, the new role this fall is one McFarland is very used to:

“I line up in the slot a lot…They recruited me as an all-purpose back, catching the ball and moving out of the backfield, that’s something that I’ve been doing for a while and something I’m kind of used to. I just didn’t do a lot last year because of the type of offense we ran. I’m looking to do that a lot more this year and basically see what we can do,” he said.

“It was fun, I’ve been doing it my whole life.”

After seeing what he can do with the ball in his hands, this certainly sounds like an exciting way to utilize McFarland’s talents. Hopefully, the shift will help him increase on his touchdown total from a year ago.
