Billy Edwards Jr., Maryland QB, makes decision on future with Terrapins
Billy Edwards Jr. has filed his formal paperwork and will enter the transfer portal, he told ESPN on Thursday.
Edwards threw for 3,322 yards and 19 touchdowns during his 3-year collegiate career at Maryland. He had a prolific but topsy-turvy 2024 season for the Terrapins, throwing for 2,881 yards with 15 touchdowns and 9 interceptions in 11 games this season for Maryland. Edwards also rushed for 5 touchdowns.
But the passing stats didn’t translate into victories this fall, as Maryland went just 4-8, and now Edwards is reportedly heading elsewhere for the 2025 season. Although the 6-foot-4, 219-pound junior just finished his 3rd season with the Terrapins, this was actually his 4th overall year in college after starting his career at Wake Forest, where he redshirted in his lone season.
This season was Edwards’ first as a starting quarterback for the Terrapins after the departure of Taulia Tagovailoa. Edwards then won the starting job over MJ Morris.
Edwards missed parts of the final 2 games of this season due to a thumb injury on his throwing hand.
It was a roller coaster of a season for Edwards in 2024.
In the first 5 games of this season, Edwards averaged 288.8 passing yards and threw 11 touchdown passes against just 2 interceptions. But in his last 6 starts, Edwards averaged just 239.5 yards and threw only 4 touchdown passes against 7 picks.
Now, it appears he’s heading elsewhere to continue his career in 2025.
