Maryland head coach DJ Durkin will retain his position with the university, according to a report from Rick Maese of the Washington Post.

According to Maese, athletic director Damon Evans and president Wallace Loh will also return to their positions, though Loh will reportedly retire following the 2018-19 school year. The University System of Maryland Board of Regents made the recommendation to reinstate Durkin, who had been placed on administrative leave since August.

The board has called a news conference for 3:30 p.m. ET.

An independent investigative committee had been constructed to look into the report of a “toxic culture” surrounding the football program. The report, which was published by ESPN, was released following the death of Jordan McNair, who died from complications with heatstroke after an organized team workout in May.

A report was released on Monday and Durkin was largely cleared of any wrongdoing. There were also reports that the committee found the situation involving a “toxic culture” was “overblown.”

Per Maese, Loh was not in favor of reinstating Durkin as head football coach but believed he had no other choice. During a press conference in the weeks after McNair’s death, Loh said that the University of Maryland accepted all “moral and legal responsibility.”

Durkin has not been around the football program since being placed on administrative leave and hasn’t coached a single game in 2018. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada has handled the role on an interim basis and has the Terrapins at 5-3 (3-2 B1G) on the season.

Since McNair’s death, several former players, staff members and parents have spoken out about the culture and Durkin. McNair’s parents believe that the head coach should’ve been fired.

Others, however, have voiced their support for Durkin. The head coach received several text messages from players and parents after he was placed on administrative leave.
