Maryland has its guy.

And unfortunately for Michigan, he was one of Jim Harbaugh’s guys.

According to Sports Illustrated’s Pete Thamel, Maryland is set to hire Michigan defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin as its next head coach.

Durkin, 37, who was in his first year with Michigan, led one of the top units in the country in 2015. The Wolverines were ranked fourth in total defense under Durkin, who will take over a Terps program in need of a major turnaround after a three-win season.

Maryland athletics director Kevin Anderson fired Randy Edsall in the middle of the season following a loss to Ohio State. Mike Locksley took over the program as interim head coach. According to 247sports, he will likely be kept on staff as one of Durkin’s top recruiters.

Durkin’s only experience as a head coach came in the 2015 Birmingham Bowl when he filled in after Will Muschamp resigned from Florida. He led the Gators to a 28-20 victory over East Carolina before reuniting with Harbaugh in Ann Arbor.

According to ESPN recruiting expert, the reaction to the hire from both committed Maryland and Michigan prospects was a positive one.
