An ex-Maryland head coach is being targeted for Texas A&M’s defensive coordinator search. Ole Miss defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin is the primary candidate for the position, according to FOX Sports reporter Bruce Feldman.
The Aggies are replacing former defensive coordinator Miko Elko, who departed to become the head coach at Duke. Under Elko, the stout Texas A&M unit ranked No. 3 in scoring defense (15.9 points per game) and No. 14 in total defense (327.5 yards per game).

Durkin revitalized the Ole Miss defense this season. The Rebels improved from 117th to 51st in scoring defense, giving up 24.7 points per game.
Durkin amassed a 10-15 record at Maryland before being fired after the practice-related death of player Jordan McNair. Durkin also served as interim head coach for Florida during its 2015 Birmingham Bowl victory vs. East Carolina.
