Maryland head coach D.J. Durkin has received some harsh criticism over the last few months following the death of Jordan McNair and a recent report that details a “toxic” culture within the Terrapins’ football program. And now that Durkin is under the microscope, details from his past are starting to emerge.

Former Michigan star and current Cleveland Brown Jabrill Peppers, who played under Durkin when he was the defensive coordinator for the Wolverines, made an appearance on the Rich Eisen Show to discuss the situation at Maryland.

Peppers’ statements on Durkin were not very flattering.

Coach Durkin, he was a different guy, you know what I mean. His tactics were different. It felt extreme at times. I’m just as shocked reading all the stuff that’s going on now. I thought he was only like that because it was his first time coaching us. He was the defensive coordinator so he was just trying to get us to buy-in to how he wants his defense to play. I thought once he became a head coach that would calm down a little bit, become more of a people person, a player’s coach.

With the reports claiming that Durkin and members of his staff were intimidating, abusive and bullied players, Peppers’ statement seems to bring even more validity to those allegations.

Jim Harbaugh was asked about Durkin’s coaching methods a few days ago, but the Wolverines’ head coach declined to comment on another program.

Durkin and other members of the staff are currently on administrative leave. Former strength and conditioning coach Rick Court “parted ways” with Maryland after reaching a financial settlement.

The most concerning statement Peppers made during his time on the Rich Eisen Show? That’s when he referred to Durkin’s coaching style as “bully coaching.”

The way I would’ve described it was kind of like bully coaching. I don’t think he meant anything by it. It was just kind of how it comes up.

Those are some really concerning comments from Peppers, which details that Durkin has a history of “bullying” behavior.

Maryland is currently investigating the culture that Durkin and his staff created.
