As Maryland prepares to begin the season, the Terrapins have made a new addition to the coaching staff.

Maryland is hiring Mike Canales as an analyst, according to Action Network HQ’s Brett McMurphy. Canales was formerly an offensive coordinator at UTEP, North Texas, USF, and Arizona, while also spending time as a quarterback coach at UTEP and Tennessee.

Canales confirmed the news by updating his Twitter profile. Canales has a head coaching record of 3-9 from interim head coaching stints at North Texas (2010, 2015).

Maryland is coming off a 2-3 record in the shortened 2020 campaign and is projected as the nation’s 57th best team, according to Athlon Sports. The Terrapins have not had a winning season since 2014.

Maryland begins the season with a home matchup vs. West Virginia on Sept. 4 (3:30 p.m. EST/ESPN).
