Maryland (3-0) is off to a hot start to the 2021 college football. Last Saturday, Maryland came out of a tough road trip to Illinois with a 20-17 victory. With this performance, Maryland announced on Twitter the offensive, defensive, and special team Players of the Week.

On offense, quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa and wide receiver Darryl Jones had big games against the defense of Illinois. Tagovailoa threw for 350 yards, one touchdown, and a QBR of 73.1 on 32 completions (out of 43 passing attempts). One of his most reliable and clutch receivers was senior wide receiver, Darryl Jones. Against Illinois, Jones caught five receptions for 66 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Maryland held Illinois to Illinois to only 335 total yards and 19 first downs on offense. Outside linebacker Durrell Nghami accounted for 3 total tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks as he constantly crashed into the opposing backfield. Defensive lineman Greg Rose also accounted for 3 total tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks. Finally, defensive end Sam Okuayinonu accounted for 6 total tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks.

On special teams, defensive tackle Ami Finau had a blocked field goal of Illinois. Senior kicker Joseph Petrino had 2 made field goals, including the game-winning 32-yard field goals with no time left on the clock.
