Lavonte Gater’s night in Champaign is over.

The Maryland defensive back was ejected from Friday night’s B1G showdown after leaving his feet and making helmet-to-helmet contact with Illinois quarterback Brandon Peters late in the first quarter. He was also flagged for roughing the passer on the play.

Gater was tossed for launching and leading with his helmet. At the time of the ejection, the score was tied at 0-0.

Gater has registered just 1 tackle on the season for the Terrapins, making his lone stop against Howard. Over the previous two seasons, the defensive back appeared in 17 contests and was credited with 36 tackles.

Maryland is off to a 2-0 start this season. Friday night’s game in Champaign was the team’s first ever visit and also served as the 2021 B1G opener.

Illinois is 1-2 with its lone victory coming against Nebraska in Week 0.
