Mike Locksley has finalized Maryland’s defensive staff for the 2022 season. An announcement came from the program on Wednesday afternoon.

In an official statement, Maryland announced that Brian Williams has been promoted to be the team’s defensive coordinator. Williams has been with the Terrapins since the start of the Locksley era in 2019.

Williams was the defensive backs coach in 2019, moved to defensive line in 2020 and added co-defensive coordinator to his title in 2021. He will still work with the defensive line, as well.

Along with the promotion of Williams, Maryland has hired Lance Thompson to coach inside linebackers and Wes Neighbors to lead the safeties unit.

Thompson has had stops at Alabama, Georgia Tech and LSU, bringing plenty of coaching experience to College Park. He was most recently an assistant at FAU.

Neighbors joins the Terrapins staff after working as a position coach at Louisiana, USF and FAU. He was most recently with the Ragin’ Cajuns on Billy Napier’s staff, coaching the safeties.

Maryland is coming off a 7-6 campaign in 2021 but struggled on the defensive side of the football. These are huge hires for Locksley and his program in College Park.
