Another really skilled prospect in the 2021 class has committed to Maryland.

Wednesday evening, the Terrapins received a verbal pledge from three-star defensive tackle Tommy Akingbesote, a native of Upper Marlboro, Maryland. He’s ranked as the No. 20 defensive tackle per 247Sports Composite Rankings, however, in the website’s own evaluation, Akingbesote sits as the No. 8 player at his position.

InsideMDSports reported the news of Akingbesote’s commitment on Wednesday night. He becomes the 15th player in the 2021 recruiting cycle to commit to Maryland.

Akingbesote is relatively new to football, picking it up before his junior year at the high school level. He was previously a solid basketball player according to his 247Sports evaluation, and brings good athleticism to the gridiron. He has an excellent frame at 6-foot-4, 270 pounds.

Though he’s a relatively raw talent, he has the size and athleticism to be a future NFL Draft pick.

Right now, there’s quite a discrepancy in Akingbesote’s composite rankings and 247Sports rankings. His composite score has him ranked No. 342 overall, narrowly missing out on a four-star ranking. His 247Sports evaluation has him listed at No. 134 overall and firmly in the four-star range.

Akingbesote received over a dozen offers on the recruiting front, eventually picking Maryland over Oklahoma, Virginia Tech, NC State, Pitt, Rutgers and others.

With Akingbesote’s commitment, there are now 13 players from the DMV area who have committed to Maryland. The Terrapins rank 11th nationally and fifth in the B1G with the 2021 class.
