The first Saturday of the season was a huge day for Maryland football. The Terrapins routed Howard, beating the Bison, 79-0, to start the season 1-0.

But before the game even started, Maryland picked up a win in recruiting, as 3-star defensive tackle Jerzhan Newton committed to the Terrapins.

Standing at 6-foot-3 and 255 pounds, Newton, who is listed as a defensive tackle, ranks as the No. 55 best strong-side defensive end according to 247Sports. The 247Sports composite rankings also have Newton as the 146th-best player in the 2020 class in Florida.

The defensive lineman was also reportedly considering Florida, Florida State, Iowa, Miami and 10 other Power-5 schools in addition to Maryland.

There’s still a long way to go until National Signing Day, but including Newton, 247Sports ranks Maryland’s 2020 recruiting class as the 37th-best in the nation and ninth-highest in the Big Ten. The Terrapins have already landed 16 recruits for the class, all of which are 3-star prospects.
