In the beginning of a major recruiting weekend for Maryland, D.J. Durkin got off to an ideal start.

Four-star defensive tackle Cam Spence announced his commitment to Maryland on Friday morning.

With offers from the likes of Alabama, Ohio State, Penn State and USC, the 6-5, 285-pound DMV native elected to keep it close to home and roll with the Terps. Spence is the highest-rated recruit so far in Maryland’s 2017 class, which got its third commitment.

He’s the No. 12 defensive tackle in the country and is the No. 190 recruit overall.

Spence could be the first of three major commitments for Maryland this weekend. Four-star quarterback Kasim Hill and three-star linebacker Ayinde Eley — Maryland natives — are both scheduled to announce their decisions on Saturday.

Durkin and his staff could get some needed momentum by doubling their 2017 class in one weekend.
