The University of Maryland Student Government Association plans to hold a rally on Thursday, Nov. 1, calling for the firing of head football coach DJ Durkin, according to a report.

Adam Longo of WUSA 9 is reporting that the school’s Student Government Association plans to hold a rally at McKeldin Mall. The rally is in response to the board of regents’ decision to recommend Durkin be reinstated as the program’s football coach.

SGA President Jonathan Allen will also reportedly propose emergency legislation calling for Maryland President Wallace Loh to terminate Durkin from his post.

According to Longo, Allen is “outraged by the decision” and said that the board of regents clearly “values the bottom line over the safety of student athletes.”

On Tuesday, the University System of Maryland Board of Regents recommended that Durkin be reinstated as head coach. Chairman James Brady called Durkin a “good man” and that the reports of a “toxic culture” were blown out of proportion.

Longo also asked Allen if students would boycott Maryland’s game against Michigan State this Saturday.

“We should be there to support the players and the team,” Allen said. “It is not a show of support for Coach Durkin.”

The decision to retain Durkin has been met with harsh scrutiny from every direction.

On Wednesday, college football analyst Paul Finebaum said that Maryland has “no soul” for keeping Durkin in place. ESPN reported that several Terrapin football players walked out of a meeting held by the head coach.

Several other media members have chimed in about the decision to keep Durkin, as well.

Matt Canada has served as the team’s interim head coach while Durkin was on administrative leave for over two months. Maryland accumulated a 5-3 record and is 3-2 in B1G play.
