During the first half of Maryland’s game with No. 3 Iowa on Saturday, Terps wide receiver Dontay Demus, Jr. was returning a kickoff and was tackled at the 10-yard line. His knee buckled and the twist as he went down resulted in a fumble recovered by the Hawkeyes.

On Tuesday, Maryland head coach Mike Locksley announced that Demus, Jr. will undergo surgery on his right knee and will be out for the remainder of the season.

Sophomore wide receiver Rakim Jarrett was asked about his thoughts on Demus Jr.’s injury, and the impact to the Terps offensive future.

“I don’t really think you can fill the void that he left. It’s going to take all the other receivers to step up, including myself, to collectively do it. … He was one of a kind,” Jarrett said.

Over the first five games of the season (including his Iowa stats), Demus, Jr. totaled 507 receiving yards, 3 touchdowns on 28 receptions. He averaged 101.4 yards per game and he led the Terps in receiving yards by over 200 yards.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Terps, as Maryland heads to Columbus to take on Ohio State on Saturday, Oct. 9 with an 11:00 AM kickoff. Without Demus, Jr., it’ll be even tougher.
