Mike Locksley releases statement on canceled Michigan State-Maryland game

Mike Locksley is at home in isolation after being diagnosed with COVID-19, the Maryland head coach feeling absolutely “gutted” that his football team’s game this weekend against Michigan State will be cancelled.
In his second season at Maryland, Locklsey is one of a staggering 22 individuals connected to the football team diagnosed with the coronavirus. A total of 15 players are among those currently out due to protocol.
“I am gutted for our team and for our fans,” said Locksley said in a statement. “This team is eager to play and compete and continue the growth we’ve seen this season. This virus is testing our players and coaches right now, but I have no doubt that we will emerge as a stronger unit for having gone through this together. As for me personally, I am feeling strong, with only minor symptoms. I will continue to lead this program virtually and our game preparations for Indiana will begin immediately.”

Maryland is 2-1 on the season having most recently upended Penn state on the road.
This weekend’s game against Michigan State represents a second-straight game that Maryland has seen cancelled due to COVID-19 following last week’s scrubbing of the slated match-up against No. 3 Ohio State. Also in jeopardy at this point is the following Saturday’s game against No. 9 Indiana.
According to the statement from Maryland, the seven staff members who tested positive account for “a population positivity rate of 14.9%.”
