Mike Locksley still looking for Maryland to hit 'the standard' despite 4-0 start
Mike Locksley is looking for his best-ever start at Maryland when the Terrapins face Indiana this weekend. However, he still believes the program has left a lot of meat on the bone during the 4-0 start to the season.
At his weekly press conference, Locksley pointed to how Maryland finished against Michigan State as an area of disappointment. The Terps started the game on a 21-0 run before scuffling throughout the middle quarters in the win.
“I didn’t like how we finished but that’s something we will continue to work on… Winning is hard in this league and for us to get road wins, I want to make sure we enjoy and celebrate them, but we also have a standard,” said Locksley. “To me, that’s where the sweet formula of winning while also playing to our standard. For me, when I come back off the field, I kind of get disappointed in myself because I feel like we lost the game… It’s because of the standard and I think our players have really embraced that.”
Locksley was eventually asked when Maryland has achieved that formula of winning plus hitting the standard, but the head coach believes the program is still searching for a perfect game. He also explained it’s up to him as a head coach to balance pushing his team to get better while also enjoying the wins that come.
“We haven’t played the perfect game. The perfect game is winning and meeting our standard, and we haven’t had any of those yet,” Locksley explained.
“Unfortunately for me, I tend to dwell on what we didn’t do, and that’s not necessarily best for our team. That’s where I struggle because my job is to continue to push, but there’s a fine line between pushing and also celebrating the victories that we have right at that minute.”
If Maryland can get the win against Indiana, it would give Locksley his first 5-0 start with the program as the Terrapins fight to stay in contention within the loaded B1G East.
