The Charlotte 49ers are reportedly expected to name 3rd-string quarterback Xavier Williams as the starter for Saturday’s game against Maryland, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Williams, a redshirt freshman, will make his first career start for Charlotte. This will be an important game as the 49ers will host the Terrapins. Charlotte will rely on Williams to lead the offense during the game.

Charlotte will not have its top 2 quarterbacks, Chris Reynolds and James Foster, who were listed as out for the Week 2 game. Reynolds played in the season-opening loss against Florida Atlantic, but he did not play in Week 1 against William & Mary. In the game against William & Mary, Foster and Williams split time.

Williams passed for 201 yards and completed 12 of 23 passes against the Tribe. Williams will need to have a record performance against Maryland to give Charlotte its first win of the season. With Foster and Reynolds out, Williams will be the starter and will have pressure on him to deliver.

Maryland heads into this game with a 1-0 record. Maryland won the first game of the season 31-10 against Buffalo. This will be Maryland’s first road game in 2022.

Maryland will take on Charlotte at 3:30 p.m. ET.
