Maryland’s coaching situation has been up in the air since D.J. Durkin was placed on administrative leave in August. But when the university fired him in late October, it guaranteed that we’d see a new face in College Park for the 2019 season.

But who will it be?

According to FootballScoop.com, the university is favoring current Alabama offensive coordinator Mike Locksley. The reason things have been so silent on the coaching search is because Locksley is waiting until after the Crimson Tide’s SEC Championship Game appearance on Saturday.

FootballScoop.com is reporting that Locksley is expected to interview for the job following Saturday’s game and is expected to be the leading candidate.

Locksley has been involved with Maryland football before, serving as the running backs coach from 1997-2002. He returned in 2012 to coach the quarterbacks and serve as the offensive coordinator until 2015.

Currently, Locksley serves as the offensive coordinator for Alabama, which owns one of the most potent and high-powered offenses in college football. The Crimson Tide are currently 12-0 and are looking to make their fifth straight appearance in the College Football Playoff.

For most of his career, Locksley has served as an assistant coach. However, He was the head coach at New Mexico from 2009 through 2011, but he found no success with the Lobos. In his two-and-a-half seasons, he was 2-26.

He also served as Maryland’s interim head coach in place of Randy Edsall in 2015. He was 1-5 with the Terrapins.

Matt Canada is also expected to be in the mix for the opening. This season, he was named the interim head coach in place of Durkin.

Maryland finished the year 5-7 under Canada’s guidance.
