Report: Maryland hires defensive coordinator
Mike Locksley’s search to find a defensive coordinator is reportedly over.
247Sports reported that Jon Hoke is set to become the defensive coordinator for the Terrapins. He has spent most of the last 20 years coaching in the NFL. He’s been the defensive backs coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the last three seasons.
Hoke’s last role at the college level was with South Carolina, where he served as the co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for the 2015 season. Maryland will be just his second college coaching gig since leaving Florida in 2001.
Though he hasn’t had much work on a college sideline recently, Hoke does bring 16 years of NFL experience to College Park. And for a defense that struggled so mightily in 2018, that kind of expertise can’t hurt.
Locksley is looking to complete his staff as soon as possible, and naming a defensive coordinator is a huge piece that has been filled.
Hoke is also the older brother of former Michigan head coach Brady Hoke.
