New Maryland defensive coordinator to step down for 'personal reasons'
Scott Shafer’s time in College Park was short-lived.
Maryland’s recently hired defensive coordinator is stepping down after just a few months on the job.
“I want to thank DJ Durkin for the opportunity to be on his staff, but at this time I feel it’s best to step aside to tend to personal matters,” Shafer said in a statement. “I’m sincerely appreciative of his support and friendship.”
Shafer was the first of three former FBS head coaches that Durkin hired after he accepted the job in December. Before joining Durkin’s staff, Shafer was the head coach at Syracuse for three seasons, where he compiled a 14-23 record.
“I, along with the entire Maryland football family, will continue to support Scott in every way that we can,” Durkin added in a statement.
Shafer also served as an assistant at Illinois and Michigan during his 25-year coaching career.
It remains to be seen who will take over Shafer’s role or why specifically he suddenly left.
Durkin did hire former Virginia coach Mike London to coach the defensive line. He would be the likely replacement for Shafer.
