Texas head coach Tom Herman has revealed who will be taking snaps under center for the Longhorns in the season opener against Maryland.

According to Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman, Texas will go with Sam Ehlinger as the starting quarterback for the Week 1 matchup against the Terrapins. Ehlinger was in a battle with Shane Buechele for the No. 1 job.

Ehlinger played in nine games as a freshman for the Longhorns last season, throwing for 1,915 yards and 11 touchdowns while completed 57.5 percent of his passes. He also had seven interceptions.

In addition to his passing numbers, Ehlinger was also the team’s leading rusher last season, totaling 381 yards and two touchdowns on 114 carries.

He did not play in last year’s matchup against Maryland.

Herman also said that Buechele could see some playing time if Ehlinger struggles to move the offense.

Texas and Maryland will square off in College Park on Saturday, Sept. 1.
