The independent commission was investigating a “toxic culture” within the Maryland football program following a report from ESPN. Following the report, Durkin was placed on administrative leave.
He has not coached a game in 2018. Matt Canada has served as the interim head coach.
ESPN’s report was released following the death of football player Jordan McNair, who died from complications from heatstroke after an organized team workout in May. During a press conference in July, President Loh said the University of Maryland accepted all “moral and legal responsibility” for McNair’s death.
Another independent investigation conducted by Rod Walters found that Maryland did not have proper treatment methods in place while McNair was showing symptoms of heatstroke. The school was found culpable in his death.
Walters’ report focused primarily on the timeline of the events and the care McNair was provided.
