By now, you’ve probably heard about what Taulia Tagovailoa is doing as Maryland’s quarterback.

You haven’t? Here’s a quick refresher. He has the highest completion percentage in the B1G, leads the league in touchdowns and has helped the Terps to their first 4-0 start since 2016.

But if he’s racking up those big numbers, his wide receivers have to be pretty good, too, right?

Tagovailoa’s 2 biggest targets this year are Dontay Demus Jr. and Rakim Jarrett, who are both among the top 10 in the B1G in receiving. Demus Jr. also appears on Pro Football Focus’ top 100 of its NFL Draft big board. As much as Tagovailoa has helped lead the Terps to the verge of a Top 25 ranking, the receivers are doing more than just going along for the ride.

“This isn’t my first rodeo with having a lot of talented receivers in one room,” Maryland head coach Michael Locksley said. “One of the things I’ve always tried to do — what I know is something that they have kind of adapted to, as well — as long as those guys get their targets and their touches, which means they get opportunities, they usually are pretty good, and this room has been really unselfish, as have most of the rooms.”

These receivers are in for a big test this week as No. 5 Iowa, led by cornerbacks Riley Moss and Matt Hankins, comes to College Park for a Friday night showdown. Moss and Hankins have 2 interceptions apiece this season, and Moss returned both of his for touchdowns, meaning it won’t be easy for the Terps receivers to get open — or stay open.

Let’s get to know Tagovailoa’s go-to guys ahead of the big matchup:

Dontay Demus Jr.

The B1G’s leading receiver, Demus is having a breakout senior season. The 2-time honorable mention All-B1G wideout ranks 11th in the country with 111.5 receiving yards per game, making him a valuable weapon for Tagovailoa and the Maryland offense.

In 5 games last year, Demus totaled 365 yards and 4 touchdowns. He’s picked up the pace this year, with 446 yards and 3 TDs through 4 games.

So, what’s changed? Simple: He’s worked to get better.

“He’s been Mr. Consistent for us the last few years,” Locksley said. “But what I think you see now is … the dividends from the work that he’s put in this summer.”

It helps when you have a quarterback who’s completing 75.5% of his passes. But even so, completion percentage is a two-way stat.

Demus, listed at 6-4 and 215 pounds, is garnering increasing chatter in NFL Draft circles, checking in at No. 94 on Pro Football Focus’s big board.

Rakim Jarrett

Jarrett is the other main receiver in Tagovailoa’s arsenal. The sophomore has tallied 265 yards and 3 touchdowns, surpassing both totals from the 4 games he played in last year.

The former 5-star recruit burst onto the scene as a freshman last year, earning honorable mention All-B1G honors after starting all 4 games he participated in. It’s no surprise he’s adjusting to the college game well considering how much interest he got on the recruiting trail in 2019.

Part of the reason Jarrett is seeing so much success through 2 years is because he and Demus have different skill sets. That means Maryland can beat opponents in multiple ways in the passing game.

“It’s kind of like a pick-your-poison receiving group,” Jarrett said. “You got Dontay Demus stretching the field vertically with his size [and] I can get underneath with the mismatches … so, pick your poison.”

Plus, he’s only a sophomore, which should scare the rest of the B1G. With 2 years of eligibility left, Jarrett (6-0, 190) could be someone to keep an eye on next year as a top receiver in the league.

Matching up with Iowa

It’s certainly a tough matchup coming up Friday night against No. 5 Iowa. Four Hawkeyes have at least 1 interception on the season, and Iowa is holding opposing offenses to just 11 points per game.

They haven’t played an offense like Maryland’s, though. The Terps have a QB with a big arm and two WRs capable of making big plays. If there’s a team that could give Iowa trouble, it’s Maryland.

“If we do things the right way up through the game and we play to our standard, then it’s another win that earns another opportunity to have another big game the following week,” Locksley said.
