Michigan vs. Michigan State
With well over 100 meetings between these two in-state rivals, Michigan vs. Michigan State remains one of the biggest rivalries in college football. While Michigan leads the overall record of the series by a wide margin, there have been stretches where either team has dominated over the course of the matchup history. The longest win streak in the series sits at 14 games, when Michigan won every game between 1916 and 1929.
The winner of Michigan-Michigan State receives the Paul Bunyan Trophy. The trophy, a four-foot tall wooden statue of Paul Bunyan, was first awarded to the winner of the series in 1953. Former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr once said that it’s the “ugliest trophy in college football,” but also noted that “when you don’t have him, you miss him.”
