When Penn State joined the Big Ten in 1993, the Nittany Lions and Spartans were designated as permanent rivals. When Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011, the conference split into 2 divisions: Legends and Leaders. At the time, Penn State was moved into the Leaders Division, while Michigan State was moved into the Legends Division.
