3 takeaways from Michigan's win over Bowling Green
Michigan did enough to get to 3-0 Saturday night, moving past Bowling Green with a final score of 31-6.
The score speaks to a dominant performance, but it somehow did not feel that way for much of the contest. A lot of that has to do with some turnovers and miscues from the Wolverines that are uncharacteristic of a Jim Harbaugh-led team.
Then again, maybe Michigan was caught looking ahead a bit to the return of its head coach. Whatever the case, the Wolverines wrapped up their nonconference slate undefeated which was always the main goal. Now, the team can prepare for the B1G opener under Harbaugh with the full coaching staff moving forward.
Here are 3 takeaways from the win over Bowling Green:
Blake Corum, ground game finds momentum
While the overall numbers don’t speak to a truly dominant performance, Michigan’s ground game found the efficiency that was missing a bit in the first two games of the season. Corum recorded his first 100-yard game of the season with 101 yards and 2 touchdowns on just 12 carries.
Overall, the team finished with 171 yards on the ground and 5.7 yards per carry. There is certainly still some room for growth with B1G teams on deck, but the Wolverines are still doing enough to have plenty of confidence moving forward.
JJ McCarthy crashes back to earth — hard
A lot was made about JJ McCarthy’s ultra-efficient start with an 87.3% completion percentage through two games. That is now a thing of the past after his performance in Week 3.
The struggles in the game started early and resurfaced at various spots in the game as McCarthy threw 3 interceptions in the game. He finished 8-for-13 overall with just 143 yards and 2 touchdowns.
There are plenty of chances to rebound moving forward, but McCarthy will need to re-find his consistency moving forward.
Cornelius Johnson snaps Michigan’s odd TD streak
Through the first 2 weeks of the season, Michigan did not struggle to score points, but there was an odd distinction to the touchdowns. Prior to Week 3, Blake Corum accounted for every rushing touchdown (4), Roman Wilson accounted for every receiving touchdown (5) and JJ McCarthy accounted for every passing touchdown (5).
That trend of touchdowns continued against Bowling Green with Corum, Wilson and McCarthy all scoring early, but Johnson finally snapped that streak and delivered a touchdown of his own. It came on a 50-yard touchdown that involved some bobbling before a dramatic snag at the goal line.

With the star power and depth on the Wolverines, it is unlikely that trend continues, but it is certainly an early-season oddity for the Michigan offense.
