One of the top quarterbacks in the 2021 recruiting class is headed to Ann Arbor.
Saturday afternoon, five-star pro-style quarterback J.J. McCarthy announced via Twitter that he was committing to Michigan. He becomes another in a long line of promising young passers to pledge to Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines.
McCarthy became the second prospect in the 2021 class to commit to Michigan, joining four-star offensive tackle Giovanni El-Hadl.
“Thank you Coach Harbaugh and Coach McDaniels…At 16 years old my dreams are closer to becoming a reality as I commit to…THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN!!!” McCarthy wrote.

At 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, McCarthy is ranked as the 19th-best overall prospect in the 2021 recruiting class, per 247Sports. He’s listed as the second-best pro-style quarterback, as well. The native of La Grange Park, Illinois is also the top player in the state.
Though he’ll be just a junior this fall, McCarthy has already received nearly three dozen offers. Along with Michigan, McCarthy received offers from 10 other B1G programs; Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin.
Since arriving at Michigan, Harbaugh has been able to lock up commitments from quality quarterback prospects, including Dylan McCaffrey, Brandon Peters, Joe Milton and Cade McNamara, all four-star prospects. He also landed former five-star gunslinger Shea Patterson on the transfer market.
