Biff Poggi is back at Michigan.

The Wolverines announced Monday that the former assistant has joined the U-M staff as associate head coach.

Poggi returns to Ann Arbor after spending the past 2 seasons at Charlotte.

Charlotte was Poggi’s first college head coaching job. The 49ers went 3-9 in 2023, Poggi’s first season, finishing tied for 11th in the AAC standings.

Things did not get better for Poggi in Year 2. The 49ers were 3-7 and 2-4 in conference play when Poggi was dismissed as head coach. His record was 6-16 in his tenure.

It’s the third time Poggi, 64, has joined the Michigan staff.

In 2016, Jim Harbaugh added Poggi to his staff in an analyst role. It was a 1-season gig, as Poggi took the head coaching job at Saint Frances Academy in his hometown of Baltimore.

After 4 seasons at Saint Frances (2017-20), Poggi was back with the Wolverines. He served as associate head coach for the Wolverines during the 2021 and 2022 seasons.

Poggi was described by Harbaugh as one of his key assistants. Current Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore worked with Poggi during the 2021 and ’22 seasons. Moore was co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at that time.
