Brady Hoke finally got the message, Michigan fans. The newly appointed head coach will wear a headset while on the sidelines.
It just comes a few years too late.
Hoke was recently appointed as the Volunteers’ interim head coach after the university decided to part ways with Butch Jones. He’ll lead the team in the final two games against No. 20 LSU and Vanderbilt. And with the temporary new gig, Hoke will also be turning over a new leaf.
The former Michigan head coach will be wearing a headset while on the sideline, he told the media on Wednesday. That’s something new for Hoke, who never once put on the headset while in Ann Arbor.
“You know, it’s funny, I was just gonna tell you I am gonna wear a headset,” Hoke said during his press conference. “I swear I was.”
Back in 2012, when Hoke was being criticized for not utilizing a headset, he called its usage “overrated” and said not wearing one allows him to “teach” his players during the game.
“It is overrated,” Hoke said years ago. “You ever watch guys on headsets and they don’t say a word? This gives me an opportunity to coach kids during a game. The game is a mental game and it’s a game of motivation and enthusiasm and teaching.
“Not wearing a headset, I get to teach on the sideline and be a part of it.”
It seems that Hoke has changed his tune after being fired by Michigan following the 2014 season.
