JJ McCarthy is set to take over as the franchise quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings in 2024.

Selected 10th overall in last week’s draft, McCarthy will have big expectations entering his rookie season in Minnesota. McCarthy figures to have an excellent chance to win the starting job going into fall camp.

Multiple sports books have already posted season-long props for McCarthy (and several other top rookies). Here’s a breakdown of what those markets look like just days after the 2024 draft:

JJ McCarthy passing yards prop

  • Where to bet the over: FanDuel | Total: 3,025.5 | -112
  • Where to bet the under: Caesars | Total: 3,150.5 | -115

The 3,000-yard threshold have proven to be difficult for rookie quarterbacks to reach in recent seasons. In the past 5 drafts, there have been just 7 (out of a possible 21) first-round quarterbacks to hit that mark.

It often comes down to games played. McCarthy would only need to average 178 passing yards per game in order to go over his total at FanDuel. However, it seems unlikely McCarthy will get that to that total. McCarthy is a young QB prospect and Minnesota has multiple capable backups if he struggles for a period of time this season.

On the other hand, the Viking clearly believe in McCarthy’s talent and should be doing everything they can to put him in positions to succeed early on. Minnesota has an elite WR room led by Justin Jefferson and a quality offensive line as well. Even if McCarthy doesn’t play in all 17 games, he could still soar over this total.

PICK: JJ McCarthy over 3,025.5 passing yards

JJ McCarthy passing touchdowns prop

  • Where to bet the over: Caesars | Total: 19.5 | -115
  • Where to bet the under: bet365 | Total: 20.5 | +100

Minnesota was not good at converting red zone opportunities into touchdowns last season. They did so at a rate of just 47.1%, which ranked 29th amongst NFL teams in 2023. That’s not a great look for offensive coordinator Wes Phillips, who is entering his 2nd season with the Vikings this fall.

However, it’s a bit misleading because of Kirk Cousins’ season-ending injury after just 8 games. The Vikings’ TD percentage in the red zone ranked 8th in the league back in 2022 when Phillips first arrived in Minnesota.

Still, McCarthy likely will still be a step-down from a healthy Cousins in his age-21 season — at least in the red zone. In 2022, Cousins ranked 1st in the NFL in red zone completion percentage amongst quarterbacks with at least 90 pass attempts in that area. He had a 22-to-2 TD-to-INT ratio in the red zone that season as well. It seems unlikely that McCarthy will be able to fix Minnesota’s red zone woes as one of the youngest quarterbacks in the NFL. If the Vikings struggle in that area again, it will put a low ceiling on McCarthy’s possible TD output.

PICK: JJ McCarthy under 20.5 touchdowns

Other JJ McCarthy props worth considering

JJ McCarthy to lead all rookies in passing yards

This prop comes via FanDuel and is priced at +280. Caleb Williams is the favorite to lead all rookies in passing this year at +110, but McCarthy isn’t far off the pace. McCarthy also has better odds than Jayden Daniels, despite the former LSU quarterback having a higher season-long passing yardage total at FanDuel (3,075.5).

Williams’ passing yardage prop is currently set at 3,400.5, making him the clear favorite in this market.

JJ McCarthy to win Offensive Rookie of the Year

McCarthy’s best price to win Offensive Rookie of the Year comes via bet365 at +1100. He’s lagging behind Williams (+225), Marvin Harrison Jr. (+600) and Daniels (+700) to take home this honor.

If you believe in McCarthy to go over 3,000 passing yards this season, there’s a high likelihood that he will at least be a candidate for this award. He has the supporting cast and opportunity to be a real contender alongside the other candidates listed above, so it comes down to whether or not you believe in his talent.
