Michigan’s roster for the upcoming basketball season just got even better.

Friday, Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports reported that former Columbia guard and graduate transfer Mike Smith has committed to Michigan. The 5-foot-11 point guard will be immediately eligible for the 2020-21 season.

Last season at Columbia, Smith averaged 22.8 points, 4.5 assists and 4.1 rebounds per game. He’ll be stepping into a vacancy left by former Wolverines guard Zavier Simpson, who’s eligibility expired following the 2019-20 season.

Smith will have one season of eligibility remaining, after missing most of his junior campaign at Columbus due to injury. It’s a big addition for Juwan Howard and the Wolverines.

In Howard’s first season as head coach, Michigan posted a 19-12 record with a 10-10 mark in B1G play.
