Desmond Howard was asked about the status of the Big Ten after Ohio State‘s national title, and he didn’t need any time to think about his response.

On Tuesday morning, Howard joined the set of ESPN’s “Get Up” to address everything that went into Ohio State’s championship win over Notre Dame on Monday night. During that segment, he was asked what a title for the Buckeyes and a 2nd straight title for the Big Ten means for college football.

According to Howard, back-to-back titles for the B1G between Michigan and Ohio State have the league clearly positioned as the current kings of college football:

“The Big Ten Conference right now, they’re the kings of the hill, they’re the kings of the mountain right now, there’s no denying that,” Desmond Howard proudly proclaimed. “You look at Ohio State, in particular, and they knocked off 2 SEC schools on the way to winning the national championship. They ran through Tennessee and then they actually beat Texas.”

Howard, the former Michigan star, even referenced his Wolverines and their bowl game performance to further back his claim:

“And you look at Michigan in the postseason and the bowl game, they took on Alabama, they beat Alabama. And you look at the Michigan team, they did it with a lot of guys on the field who you’ve never even heard of, who you’ve never seen play,” explained Howard. “They had a freshman RB who ran for 100 yards against all those 4 and 5-stars that Alabama brings defensively.”

While the SEC now has no title in back-to-back seasons, it’s also likely the most picks in this year’s NFL Draft will come from Ohio State. If that happens, it will be back-to-back years that a non-SEC program has claimed the most picks after Michigan took that honor in 2024.

There is always the chance for the SEC to re-flip the script in 2025, but it sure looks like the B1G’s world at this moment in history.
