D.J. Durkin’s time in Ann Arbor could be short-lived.

The first-year Michigan defensive coordinator is anĀ emerging candidate for the Maryland job, according to Yahoo’s Pat Forde.

Forde reported that Durkin met recently with Maryland officials, sources said. No job offer was made, but the interview went well, sources said.

Durkin doesn’t have any head coaching experience other than the one game he served as Florida’s interim coach in the Birmingham Bowl last year.

He’s worked under both Urban Meyer and Jim Harbaugh as a defensive coach. He had stints with Urban Meyer at Bowling Green and at Florida, and worked with Harbaugh at Stanford from 2007-2009 before reuniting with him at Michigan.

Durkin is currently leading the second-ranked defense (based on yardage) in the country. The Wolverines recorded a historic three-game shutout stretch in the middle of the season, and have only allowed one 100-yard rusher all season.

Maryland fired head coach Randy Edsall following a loss to Ohio State in October. Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson made it clear that he wanted a head coach that could play an up-tempo, modern offense.

It remains to be seen who else Maryland will pursue, but according to college football insider Bruce Feldman, the list of candidates has been lengthy.

With where they are in the interview process, it wouldn’t be surprising to hear Maryland announce its next head coach in the next couple weeks.
