It sure sounds like Michigan is getting excited for the debut of a new offense under offensive coordinator Josh Gattis.

Gattis arrives in Ann Arbor after serving as co-offensive coordinator for Nick Saban’s Alabama staff in 2018. He is bringing with him a bit of a new style to the Wolverines, and the results could be explosive.

Jim Harbaugh’s squad did not necessarily struggle to score points last season, averaging 35.2 points per game on the year. However, it is true that the offense sputtered at times against stiffer competition and put a lot more pressure on the defense.

Michigan scored 21 points or less in games against Notre Dame, Northwestern, Michigan State, and Florida last season. The team went 2-2 in those games but looked largely unimpressive offensively. In the team’s loss to Ohio State, the offense only seemed to find a groove after the score was out of hand.

Offensive line coach Ed Warinner discussed the new offense recently and how the new-look unit can take a lot of pressure off the defense. According to Isaiah Hole with Wolverines Wire, it is really quite simple to Warinner:

“Score more points!” Warinner said. “At the end of the day, you can’t have your cake and eat it. We want to be explosive, we want to make big plays, but can you control the clock for 35 minutes? Big plays mean you don’t have the ball as long. So there’s a balance of that.”

Warinner did also explain his excitement for Gattis’ offense and how it matches up with Michigan’s personnel:

“I’m excited. I’m excited because we have the personnel and the people that this should be an exciting style of play for us.”

The Wolverines are moving forward offensively after running what Harbaugh labeled a “collaborative effort” without an offensive coordinator in 2018. While the offense did have a solid resume last season, it will be interesting to see if the unit can remain explosive against tougher competition. Either way, count Warinner among those looking forward to the new look.
