The College Football Playoff rankings were last revealed on Tuesday and in regard to change, well, there wasn’t any in the Top 10.

Literally no changes took place among the Top 10, so Michigan stayed put at No. 4. The next-highest Big Ten team is Ohio State at No. 10. Those two will of course play on Nov. 24 at Ohio Stadium.

If Michigan wins out and beats the Buckeyes on the road, it will end the season at 12-1, winners of the B1G and its only loss coming to what would probably be an undefeated Notre Dame team. That resume would be very strong, as the CFB Playoff chair has said in the past.

Out of all the craziness that can take place, wouldn’t Alabama losing be the craziest of the bunch? But, at 12-1, Alabama would still be a shoo-in for the playoff, right?

Not according to ESPN analyst Seth Walder. Walder works with ESPN’s Playoff Predictor and was on The Paul Finebaum Show talking about different potential scenarios.

Here’s what he had to say about a potential choice between 12-1 Michigan and 12-1 Alabama:

“It’s a really fascinating situation,” Walder said. “It’s a great time of year because we get to talk about this. If that happens, firstly, let’s put the Playoff Predictor aside for a second. Think about the position the committee is going to be in is very precarious. They’ve straddled this line between best and most deserving in the past, and this would really make them pick a side. If you leave out Alabama, you’re leaving out the best team in the country. If you put Alabama in instead of say, Michigan, then you’re saying conference championships don’t matter and strength of schedule doesn’t matter. So, that’s a really tough choice for the committee. I’ll say this: the Playoff Predictor is reasonably clear here. It could go either way, but it does pretty clearly think that Michigan would be the favorite to get in over a 12-1 Alabama team in that scenario for the last spot, which I do think is pretty interesting.”

Not only does Walder think Michigan would get in over Alabama, which sounds pretty crazy enough, he thinks the Playoff Predictor would have Michigan as the favorite “pretty clearly.”

Let’s hope for some craziness to take place in the coming weeks.
