Michigan officially hired Sherrone Moore as its next head coach on Friday evening.

Shortly after the hire was finalized, ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg graded the hire — as he has done for every other Power-5 head coaching hire so far this offseason. Rittenberg graded the hire as a B+.

Rittenberg pointed to Moore’s status as a first-year head coach as his biggest challenge entering this endeavor. However, he also acknowledged that Moore is a good fit for the role following his time as Michigan’s acting head coach during multiple suspensions for Jim Harbaugh over the past year.

Here’s some of his analysis:

Context really matters around Moore’s hire. Michigan could have gone with a more established head coach, but the timing of Harbaugh’s departure, the roster situation and the mood around the program all worked very much in Moore’s favor. The key is how much patience Michigan has with him as he settles into a great but challenging job with the program at its highest point in a generation.

Michigan opted to promote Moore within a couple days of Jim Harbaugh’s departure rather than run a full search for a replacement.

Moore, 37, becomes the 21st head coach in Michigan football history. He reportedly agreed to a 5-year contract with the Wolverines that will carry a salary of $5.5 million for the 2024 season.
