ESPN’s FPI has been updated coming out of Week 2, and Michigan had a surprising tumble coming out of the weekend.

Despite a 2-0 start for Jim Harbaugh’s program, Michigan slid 3 spots on the latest Football Power Index ratings. That puts the Wolverines No. 10 on the system and just behind Penn State, Oklahoma and Notre Dame.

That slide is hard to figure, particularly for a team that is 2-0 and has outscored opponents 65-10 across the first two weeks. It is true the competition has not been stiff, but Michigan has done everything it should have, especially while playing under interim coaches.

Even more surprising, Michigan currently has a projected win-loss total of 9.8-2.4 per the FPI. The Wolverines are given just a 5% chance of winning out in the regular season, trailing Ohio State (15.2%) and Penn State (9.4%) within the B1G.

At the end of the day, the FPI does not matter for Michigan’s hopes of winning another B1G title and returning to the College Football Playoff. The system also has some clear flaws with Nick Saban’s Alabama program still anchored in the No. 1 spot after a 34-24 home loss to Texas. Meanwhile, the Longhorns are No. 6, 5 spots behind the Tide program they just beat.

The good news for Michigan is the Wolverines get one more tune-up game before the start of B1G play, a 7:30 pm primetime kick-off against Bowling Green. It will also be the final game without Harbaugh on the sidelines as he completes his 3-game suspension.
