Former Michigan DE Chase Winovich was a star for Jim Harbaugh’s program before taking on the NFL. After parts of 5 seasons in the league, the former Wolverine announced Tuesday he’s calling it a career.

In a post on Instagram, Winovich announced he was officially retiring from the league. He most recently appeared with the Miami Dolphins this season.

“It has been a wild 21 years playing football! The time has come for me to serve the universe in other ways,” wrote Winovich.

“Not only would I, and all the poeple that played vicariously through me, go on to play in the NFL, but we also went on to be named MVP and team’s hardest worker at Michigan, then led the 2020 Patriots in sacks. We did that.

“I consider myself beyond blessed and deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to play the game I love in front of so many and on some of the world’s biggest stages.”

Winovich played for the Wolverines from 2015-18, playing a starring role in his final 3 seasons. His career-high numbers of 73 tackles, 19 TFLs, 8.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles came in 2017. Overall, Winovich left Ann Arbor with 166 tackles, 43 TFLs and 18.5 sacks.

Winovich would enter the NFL as a 3rd-round pick of the New England Patriots and played 3 seasons with the franchise. He most recently suited up with the Miami Dolphins but had just 2 tackles in 3 games and did not see the field in a regular defensive role.

With his career now concluded, Winovich leaves the NFL with 12 career sacks, 107 total tackles, 11 TFLs and 26 QB hits with a forced fumble and an interception.
