Former Michigan linebacker James Ross III has landed a defensive coordinator gig at the NCAA Division III level.

Ross will be the defensive coordinator at Hope College, located in Holland, Mich. It’s a promotion for the former Wolverines defender, who joined the program last season to be the linebackers coach.

“I’m so excited about what James Ross is going to bring to the table as defensive coordinator,” said Hope head coach Peter Stuursma said, per Yahoo Sports. “As we were talking about this, I asked him to put a little presentation together for me. Twenty minutes into that, I knew where we wanted to go. James brings such energy, enthusiasm, and instant credibility with our players. Since April, to watch the relationship he has with our players, it is really a lot of fun and exciting for me.”

Ross played at Michigan from 2012-15, spending one season under head coach Jim Harbaugh. After his playing days, Ross served as a graduate assistant on Harbaugh’s staff in Ann Arbor.

During his playing days at Michigan, Ross piled up 187 tackles, 16.5 for loss and forced 2 fumbles.
