Former Michigan RB gets drafted to the USFL
Former Michigan RB De’Veon Smith was drafted by the Pittsburgh Maulers on Wednesday.
Smith played for the Wolverines from 2013 to 2016. He also tallied 2,235 yards rushing with 22 touchdowns on the ground during his time in Ann Arbor. Smith was drafted with the 1st pick in the 28th round of the USFL draft.
After his college days, Smith moved on to the NFL. He would sign with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in May of 2017. In 2018, Smith was a member of the practice squad in Washington.
He also spent some time in various other professional football leagues as well. Smith played in the AAF for the Orlando Apollos (2019), XFL for the Tampa Bay Vipers (2020), and even the CFL with the BC Lions on their practice squad in 2021.
Following the news, the ‘Michigan On BTN’ account on Twitter posted a highlight of Smith from a Michigan game in 2015 where the Wolverines shutout No. 22 BYU 31-0.
Here’s the clip of Smith bursting through the offensive line for the score.
It’s hard not to recall this play when one thinks of De’Veon Smith (@i_BSmith4).
