Former Michigan and current Carolina Panthers wide receiver Devin Funchess made a special promise to the mother of a fallen soldier prior to his game on Monday. Funchess guaranteed her that he would score a touchdown in this weekend’s “Salute to Service” game.

He delivered on that promise not once, but twice, catching two touchdown passes in Carolina’s 45-21 win over the Miami Dolphins on Monday night.

The soldier is Sgt. Dillon Baldridge, who died while serving in the Army during an attack in Afghanistan in June. Funchess also wore Baldridge’s initials on his helmet during the Salute to Service game.

“I told Dillon’s mom that I was going to get in the end zone for her,” Funchess said, per the Panthers team website. “That’s what I did. I made sure she got the first touchdown (ball).

“I’m two months older than (Dillon),” Funchess said. “He was a top-notch shooter. He was a sniper. His mom said he was the most joyful boy you’d ever meet. It was an honor meeting her. Just five months ago he passed away. It was an honor to get in the end zone for her.”

Funchess has scored five touchdowns so far in the 2017 season, but those two on Monday night are some of the most meaningful and important of his career.
