Here's what Michigan OC Josh Gattis had to say about ongoing RB battle
One thing is certain: Michigan will have a new look backfield heading into 2019.
The Wolverines are coming off a season where they were really effective running the ball. Unfortunately, they are also replacing their top two rushers from last season. Karan Higdon and Chris Evans combined for 1,600 yards on the ground, but Higdon has graduated and Evans is suspended for the year.
When asked about the position group in fall camp, Michigan’s offensive coordinator Josh Gattis indicated no one player has set himself apart. But according to Aaron McMann with MLive.com, Gattis is not viewing that as a negative:
“I can’t see one guy, yet, pull away from that group,” offensive coordinator Josh Gattis said Wednesday. “And that’s the exciting thing…in that group, in most cases you have one guy pull out in front but this group has kind of pushed themselves up front.”
The three players most likely to get the nod as the starter are Tru Wilson, Christian Turner, and Zach Charbonnet. Of the trio, Wilson has the most experience with 364 yards as a junior in 2018. Turner saw limited action and recorded 95 yards as a freshman. Charbonnet is a true freshman newcomer who was a four-star recruit and the No. 4 RB nationally coming out of high school.
Regardless of who wins the starting job, Michigan will likely try to effectively use multiple guys throughout the year. The Wolverines had six players with 20 or more carries in 2018.
