There was a chance that Brady Hoke’s next gig would be with one of the more successful non-Power Five programs.

According to Fox Sports college football reporter Bruce Feldman, he was set for a second interview with East Carolina on Saturday to fill its head coach opening.

But ECU went in a different direction.

Feldman reported on Saturday night that ECU will hire Duke offensive coordinator Scottie Montgomery. The 37-year-old coach was the university’s final choice instead of the former Michigan coach, who was reportedly a leading candidate heading into the weekend.

The Fayette Observer reported that ECU and Hoke couldn’t agree on a budget for a potential coaching staff, which would have also included Hoke’s brother, Jon, who was until recently the co-defensive coordinator at South Carolina.

Hoke lived in North Carolina during 2015 and appeared on a twice-weekly SiriusXM radio show.

He also reportedly interviewed for the Tulane job over the weekend, but that job went to Georgia Southern coach Willie Fritz.

It remains to be seen whether or not Hoke will take another year off of coaching or be willing to take on an assistant role.
