Former Michigan coach Brady Hoke wanted to replace Butch Jones. Badly.

How do we know that?

Well, the Times Free Press reported that former Tennessee athletic director John Currie received texts left and right about Butch Jones’ replacement in Knoxville. That included texts from former players, journalists and even one eager interim head coach.

According to the documents acquired by the Times Free Press, here was the “hire me!” text that Hoke sent his former boss during the coaching search:

“JOHN I HOPE YOU DO KNOW I WOULD LIKE TO BE YOUR HEAD FOOTBALL COACH I DO KNOW THE ENVIRONMENT WE LIVE IN AND WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE AT TENNESSEE!” Hoke wrote, using all capital letters.

After Currie was fired by Tennessee, Hoke wrote (in all caps, of course):

“JOHN VERY SORRY TO HEAR WHAT HAS HAPPENED THIS IS THE BULL CRAP THAT COLLEGE FOOTBALL HAS BECOME. IF I CAN BE OF ANY HELP PLEASE LET ME KNOW.”

It’s a shame that Hoke wasn’t hired to become Tennessee’s new coach. That job went to Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, who was hired by Currie’s replacement, Philip Fulmer. Hoke did bounce back by getting an assistant job with the Carolina Panthers.

Perhaps all-caps texts only work on NFL front offices.
